From the 13th century, it was the scene of battles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. It was later modified in the 16th century, when it became the home of the Bastiani Montauti family. The Arch. Domenico di Baccio D’Agnolo then opened large windows overlooking the entire Ema valley, as well as the pleasant double frescoed loggia, with jasmine vines. At that time, Filippo Niccolini commissioned the renowned architect Gherardo Silvani to expand the structure so that the villa lost its fortress appearance.

Interiors

On the ground floor, the vast reception rooms feature vaulted frescoed, and coffered ceilings, pietra serena fireplaces, and decorated grotesque windows.

The circle of Pandolfo Sacchi, a seventeenth-century Medici artist, created the refined ornaments depicting symbols of Eloquence, Idleness, and Abundance.

The side wings of the castle divide the private apartments, with the sleeping area on the first floor. The master apartment has a magnificent ceiling richly carved with geometric motifs, paintings, and gilding with a coat of arms.
